Group 3 Winner for Freeze
06 November 2010 - Breednet Maribyrnong Plate a Family Affair A stallion who found it hard to find a home was represented by his first stakes-winner at Flemington on Saturday. Freeze has a pedigree that would be welcomed on most farm's around Australia however his one win from 6 starts saw him given the cold shoulder by breeders. He had 12 live foals in his first crop, 22 in his second and 17 in his third, which included Arctic Command. The Wendy Kelley-trained gelding had little luck when fourth at his career debut at Moonee Valley on October 23. But besides hitting a seagull early in the race he enjoyed a trouble free run under Dale Smith in the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m), writing his name in the record books alongside that of his half-brother General Truce (Brief Truce) who won the same race 12 months ago. Arctic Command defeated the unlucky Aashiq (General Nediym) by a neck with Running Tall (Stratum) a long-neck back in third (photo Steve Hart). Hes a lovely horse to train, Kelly said. Dale Smith has done a marvellous job. He has come and done his trackwork and trialled him for us. Bred by Kevin and Tanith O'Brien's Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, Arctic Command was consigned to this year's Inglis Premier Yearling sale where he was knocked down to Ken King Thoroughbreds for $55,000. That price is more than double the next most expensive of the 15 yearlings by Freeze. He is the third foal of the winning General Nediym mare General Resolve. Besides her two Maribyrnong Plate winners she is also the dam of Melbourne winner and South Australian Magic Millions runner-up Complete Control (Rubiton). From the family of Jetball, Marwina and Into The Night, General Resolve missed to Commands in 2008 and was covered by Testa Rossa last season. After three seasons in NSW, Freeze was moved to Springfields Stud in Queensland where he covered 64 mares in 2008 and 63 in 2009. A son of champion stallion Marsay out of the outstanding imported French mare Snowdrift, Freeze is a half-brother to AJC The Galaxy (G1) winner Snowland, multiple Group 2 winner Portillo and multiple Listed stakes-winner Snippetson. He stands at Springfields Stud near Allora, Darling Downs at a fee of $4,400.
